Volkswagen Scirocco R (2010)

The Volkswagen Scirocco R - conceptualized by Volkswagen Individual - is an impressive performance package with a brilliant engine and chassis, unique looks and exclusive features. Instead of the usual six-cylinder used so far in R-models of this segment, a boosted four-cylinder TSI is being used in the new VW Scirocco R. Its advantages: very high power and torque values with significantly reduced fuel consumption. On average, just 8.3 liters of super unleaded flows to the combustion chambers via direct injection per 100 kilometers of driving. That corresponds to CO2 emissions of 194 g/km - top values for a fast 250 km/h (electronically limited) sports car.

Volkswagen Scirocco fleet at the start in 24 hour race: Volkswagen plans to demonstrate once again at the 24 hour race just how much dynamic potential the Volkswagen Scirocco R possesses. An entire fleet of two-door cars, five cars altogether, will enter the marathon ride through the "Green Hell" there; all of them bear a close resemblance to the production vehicle, both technically and visually.

Gas in a literal sense: Three of the Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 versions are powered by a TSI gasoline engine with 315 PS. Two other VW Scirocco GT24 cars carry the additional CNG label, designating Compressed Natural Gas, because their TSI is fired with very cleanly combusting natural gas - an exception in car racing. The 300 PS Volkswagen Scirocco GT24-CNG cars have extremely low emissions. After winning and putting its stamp on the Dakar Rally with the Race Touareg powered by a fuel-efficient TDI (direct-injection diesel), Volkswagen is now taking up the issue of sustainability in the Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 as well - and emphatically - on the race course.

VW Scirocco R - from car racing to the street: This is not the Scirocco's first race of this type. This Volkswagen was shaking up the racing field on such occasions as far back as the 1970s. And in 2008, professionals the likes of Carlos Sainz and Hans-Joachim Stuck rocketed two VW Scirocco GT24 cars to a dual victory in its class. In 2009, things will be even more exciting. Because for the first time, the event offers an opportunity to take a good look at the street version of the racing cars in the form of the new Volkswagen Scirocco R. The first production cars will be produced later this year; with a manual six-speed transmission or - as in the Volkswagen Scirocco race vehicles - with the optional DSG 6-speed dual clutch transmission. Always aboard as standard equipment on the front-wheel drive vehicle: the XDS electronic transverse differential lock on the front axle for attaining optimal traction performance; this system was introduced for the first time on the new Volkswagen Golf GTI.

R-Drive - sports car engine
About one year after the market launch of the third generation Volkswagen Scirocco and the dual victory on the Nürburgring track, the new R-version is going to the starting line as what is certainly the most powerful production VW Scirocco ever built. To attain the very high specific power in the 2.0 TSI (97.5 kW / 132.5 PS per liter displacement), Volkswagen decided on a turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine known internally as the EA113.

More dynamic performance by clever downsizing: Like all TSI engines, the R-version too combines the efficiency of direct injection with the power of engine boosting. Despite downsizing the engine displacement and number of cylinders, the 1,984 cm3 sixteen-valve, four-cylinder engine develops significantly more power (+ 15 PS) and torque (+ 30 Newton-meter) than the six-cylinder engine of the most recent Volkswagen Golf R32. Specifically, the 2.0-liter TSI in the new VW Scirocco R attains a maximum power of 265 PS at 6,000 rpm. Its maximum torque - a hefty 350 Newton-meter - is available over an immense range of engine speed: 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. This makes for agile responsiveness of the engine, which is able to spontaneously summon torque in the blink of an eye in practically any speed range. The engine's acoustic output impressively underscores its special kind of power development. The exhaust system itself is designed as a double-flow system. Oval chrome tailpipes extend out from the bumper, one on the left and one on the right.

Engine of the Year for the Volkswagen Scirocco R: The in-line four cylinder, which has already earned four "Engine of the Year" awards, builds up its powerful torque via a turbocharger (up to 1.2 bar boost pressure) with intercooling. The engine, weighing in at just 152 kilograms, is controlled by fully electronic engine management with E-gas. The four cylinder's pistons have bolts with higher strength compared to less powerful versions. The connecting rods were also designed to be stronger, to reliably transmit the engine's high torque to the crankshaft. Because of the hefty engine forces that are generated, the cylinder block itself was reinforced as well.

All of this has a highly dynamic effect: The lightweight 1,333 kilogram VW Scirocco R needs just 6.0 short seconds for the intermediate sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear. It is precisely this type of driving, with a sensation of the build up to maximum torque that is "felt" right from idling, that distinguishes this sports car. It is an impressive, cool cruiser for every route and day of the year. Yet, those who downshift and give the car full throttle awaken a second side of the Volkswagen Scirocco R: a wild beast that sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, that is not electronically limited until it reaches 250 km/h and 6,320 rpm, and that accomplishes the classic 1,000 meter sprint in 25.9 seconds.

It is a given that this VW Scirocco will also have an optional dual clutch transmission (DSG). Those who choose the innovative 6-speed DSG will experience an even faster sprinting Volkswagen Scirocco R: the 100 km/h mark drops down to 6.4 seconds here. As is so often the case with a DSG, gains in dynamic performance (and comfort) are by no means purchased at the expense of fuel efficiency or emissions. In fact, the opposite is true, as demonstrated by its 8.2 liter average fuel consumption and 192 g/km CO2.

R-Chassis - sports car tuning
Volkswagen will launch the front-wheel drive VW Scirocco R with a specially tuned sport chassis and XDS electronic transverse differential lock as standard equipment. The latter refers to a functional extension of the electronic differential lock (EDS) that is integrated in the ESP system and eliminates any type of traction loss.

XDS compensates for understeer: As soon as the intelligent electronics detects unloading of the front wheel at the inside of a curve in fast curve driving, the ESP hydraulics applies braking pressure at this specific wheel to restore optimal traction. So, XDS acts like a transverse differential lock that compensates for the typical understeer of front-wheel drive cars in fast curve driving. The driving behavior of the already agile Volkswagen Scirocco R is made significantly more precise and neutral thanks to XDS.

Chassis layout from production: In front, the Volkswagen Scirocco R has a McPherson suspension for precise tracking and balanced comfort properties. In the rear, it is a four-link suspension that convincingly meets the challenge of achieving chassis tuning that is sporty yet comfortable.

DCC optimally resolves dilemma between comfort and dynamics: As an option, the VW Scirocco R will also be available with DCC Dynamic Chassis Control. This system continually adjusts damping of individual wheels to roadway conditions based on signals from three body sensors and displacement sensors for each wheel. During acceleration, braking and steering processes, chassis damping is stiffened in fractions of a second to optimally meet vehicle dynamic requirements. By making these automatic adjustments, DCC significantly increases comfort in driving situations that are less challenging dynamically, resolving the conflict in goals between a stiff sporty tuning and a comfortable one. Besides the "Normal" DCC mode, the driver can also choose the "Sport" or "Comfort" mode.

New R-wheel styling: Standard equipment includes newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels ("Talladega" type) with size 235/40 tires. An optional 19-inch version of the same wheel type is also offered. Both wheel-tire combinations support the maximum attainable transverse dynamics of the new sports car.

17-inch braking system for maximum deceleration: The braking system was also modified to handle the VW Scirocco R's higher level of driving performance. That is why a 17-inch system is used, instead of a 16-inch system; all four brakes have ventilated disks and R-specific brake calipers painted in glossy black. In front, the disks have a diameter of 345 millimeters, and in the rear 310 millimeters. The electronic stabilization program (ESP) was also modified. A new Sport mode can be selected by pressing the ESP button. This makes the ESP respond later in very fast driving on roads with lots of curves - e.g. on a race course - for handling that is even more agile. The electro-mechanical power steering of the Volkswagen Scirocco R was also given a sportier tuning curve.

R-Design - sports car look
Visually, many aspects of the Volkswagen Scirocco R follow the lead of the GT24, the VW Scirocco designed for car racing.

Front end with LED daytime running lights: The front end design reflects the motto "form follows function"; it has three large air inlets with large louvers in the specially designed Volkswagen Scirocco R bumper that engineers designed for optimal cooling of the brakes and engine. Integrated to the right and left of the outboard air inlets are newly designed and standard LED daytime running lights. The narrow, unique radiator grille screen is styled in a high-end glossy black. Here (as on the tailgate) the strongest VW Scirocco of all times can be identified by a new R-logo design that it sports in chrome on a black background. Providing for perfect illumination of the roadway, meanwhile, are standard bi-xenon headlights with integrated turn signal lights.

Rear end with double-flow exhaust system: Compared to all other production Sciroccos, the rear image of this car is dominated by a considerably larger roof edge spoiler and a prominent glossy black diffuser in the lower area of the bumper that shows typical R-design styling. Both of these components - diffuser and roof edge spoiler - reduce aerodynamic lift at the rear axle. Stylistically, the oval chrome tailpipes of the double-flow exhaust system are harmoniously integrated into the overall design of the rear. One tailpipe on the left and the other on the right define the border between the black diffuser and the bumper painted in car color. In addition, the taillights of the new Volkswagen Scirocco R were given a smoked tint.

Side profile with new R-wheels: The side view is characterized by powerfully styled side skirts painted in car color as well as new "Talladega" style alloy R-wheels in 18-inch format. The milled, polished wheels sport five sets of three spokes that are as visually unique and striking as the wheels of the Golf GTI ("Denver") and offer a very attractive view of the large 17-inch braking system with its glossy black calipers and R-logo. As an option, Volkswagen is also offering a 19-inch version of the "Talladega" wheels (named after a US race course). Like the brake calipers, the outside mirrors of the VW Scirocco R are always painted a glossy black, independent of the car color.

The interior of the new VW Scirocco R presents an altogether refined appearance. Like all R-models, specific interior accents, sport seats (optionally in leather) and numerous other dynamic features are applied. And indeed as standard equipment. Details of features distinguishing the Volkswagen Scirocco R from other versions with up to 200 PS power:
Sport seat system with seat covers in "Kyalami" fabric weave (named after the Formula-1 race course in South Africa), with R-Logo on the front head restraints in "Art Grey". Inner surface of contoured seat side supports has crystal gray microfibers.
Unique aluminum decor inserts in the instruments. High-gloss black accents in the center console area, door handles, gearshift grip, air vents and steering wheel spokes.
Parking brake grip and gearshift trim in leather, with "Art Grey" decorative seams. Floor mat inserts are also in "Art Grey".
Aluminum tread plates with R-Logo worked in.
Instruments with white backlighting and blue pointers and speedometer indicator up to 300 km/h.
Multifunctional leather steering wheel, flat-bottomed, in R-design (three spokes, perforated leather in upper and lower third, grip recesses right and left), with "Art Grey" decorative seams, R-logo in the lower steering wheel spoke and multifunctional keys in the steering wheel's cross spokes. When the Volkswagen Scirocco R is ordered as a DSG version, the steering wheel is equipped with shift paddles (+/-).

R-Extra features - sports car plus
All Sciroccos sport a very extensive list of features. Standard features on board include six airbags, ESP with countersteering assistance, electro-mechanical power steering, daytime running lights, semi-automatic climate control ("Climatic"), central locking with RF remote control and power windows, to name just a few details. On the VW Scirocco R, this list is lengthened to include the features already touched upon under "Interior". These extra functional features are included:

Opel Insignia OPC (2010)

The high performance version of the Opel Insignia, Car of the Year 2009, was unveiled on May 7, 2009, when the Opel Insignia OPC premiered at the 2009 Barcelona Motor Show, ten years after the launch of the first OPC model (Opel Performance Center).

The heart of the Opel Insignia OPC is its 2.8 V6 Turbo engine. Derived from the powerful gasoline engine already available on the top-of-the-line Insignia, this version reaches an output of 239 kW/325 hp. The increase in power was obtained by a special engine development and by reworking the exhaust, significantly reducing the counter pressure. And because sound is so important in the appreciation of an engine, the acoustic specialists worked on the exhaust of the V6 by adopting specific center and rear mufflers.

The Opel Insignia OPC is available with a six-speed manual gearbox. The strong torque of 400 Nm ensures abundant pulling power even at lower engine speeds. With this engine performance, the Opel Insignia OPC reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (restricted) and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in six seconds.

The already very well performing Insignia chassis was further fine tuned for the OPC variant which ride height has been reduced by 10 mm compared to the Insignia (AWD Sport version). The newly developed mechatronic chassis also receives a new front axle. The front suspension architecture of the Opel Insignia OPC retains a so called McPherson strut, however the engineers at the Opel Performance Center came up with an evolution called HiPerStrut (for high performance strut). Benefits are an improved steering feel, reduced steering disturbances due to the high torque and an enhanced feeling in the handling for the driver.

The Opel Insignia OPC also comes with the adaptive FlexRide suspension which not only adapts to driving situation and driving style but also to the driver's preferences. While on the Insignia the system offers the choice between a standard adaptive setting, a more comfortable mode and a sport mode, the OPC is definitely addressing those enjoying a sportier ride. OPC drivers can choose between three different sport modes: the standard mode as the high comfort setting, a special Sport mode and the OPC mode, for optimal performance.

For the first time also in the OPC portfolio, the Adaptive 4x4 system and its electronic rear limited slip differential (eLSD) are standard. The four-wheel drive management unit has been recalibrated to adapt torque distribution to the sporty philosophy of the OPC. Taking the higher performances of the OPC into consideration, significant development efforts were put into further improving the brake system. Connoisseurs will immediately spot the Brembo calipers and the perforated 355 mm disc on the front axle.

"I was personally involved in the development of the Opel Insignia OPC and I very much enjoyed extensive testing on the most demanding race track of the world, the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Our target was to rival the "best of the best"," said Hans Demant, Managing Director Adam Opel GmbH.

Distinctive looks are a clear statement on dynamic ambitions
The top-of-the-line body style dressed in an elegant sports outfit is inspired by the GTC concept car which starred in 2007, but still remains true to the Insignia's design philosophy of sculptural artistry meets German precision.

Compared to less powerful versions of the Insignia, the OPC shows a spectacular new front end with two large vertical intakes and a specific rear bumper with dual integrated exhausts. The 19-inch wheels (tires: 245/40) are standard and give the car the stance it deserves. New 20-inch lightweight forged wheels (with 255/35 tires) are available as an option.

The dynamic sportiness of the exterior is also mirrored in the cockpit. When opening the door, the OPC is immediately impressive, from unique Recaro seats to a flat-bottomed sporty steering wheel and specific gear knob. The OPC also presents distinctive instrument graphics.

"The Opel Insignia OPC marks the beginning of a new era for our OPC portfolio; still bold, but also more mature and refined, and more ambitious than ever. The OPC epitomizes the Insignia experience: dynamic and refined", says Alain Visser, GM Europe Vice President Opel.

Inspeção do colo.

BMW Z4 UK Version (2010)

Download Wallpapers(14)
BMW has a long and illustrious history of building two seat sports cars. From the very first 3/15 PA Wartburg Roadster in 1930, BMW has produced highly distinctive roadsters. With their long bonnet, setback glasshouse, front engine rear-wheel-drive configuration and with the two seats positioned close to the rear axle, every BMW roadster lives up to the ultimate driving machine promise.

Now, nearly 80 years after the first BMW roadster went on sale, the latest has been launched in the UK. Featuring a host of innovations never before featured on a BMW of this type, the new BMW Z4 is the first to come with a two-piece, electro-hydraulically operated Retractable Hard-Top roof that can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds. The new BMW Z4 is also the first roadster to be offered with Adaptive M Sport Suspension. This system features a ride height 10mm lower than the standard car for a more dynamic drive. Adaptive M Sport Suspension also comes with electronically controlled dampers that offer three different configurations from Normal to Sport+ so a driver can fine tune the car's set-up.

The standard Drive Dynamic Control function is another BMW roadster first and allows the driver to alter the chassis configuration to suit their needs. Now the vehicle has the capability to morph between comfortable yet sporty cruiser through to outright performance car. Depending on model specification, the throttle and steering response, level of ride comfort, Dynamic Stability Control response and, on automatic or Double Clutch Transmission cars, gear change times can all be altered.

Drivetrain
To underscore the potency of the new BMW Z4 the model comes with a choice of three high output six-cylinder powerplants. The range flagship is an International Engine of the Year winner in the shape of the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine. The 306hp BMW Z4 sDrive35i powers its way from zero to 62mph in 5.2 seconds before going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. The strong performance credentials are matched in terms of economy and emissions.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35i records a combined consumption figure of 30.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 219g/km. It is worth nothing that the sDrive35i can be specified with a Double Clutch Transmission and a vehicle so equipped records a faster zero to 62mph time of 5.1 seconds, 31.4mpg consumption and lower CO2 emissions at 210g/km.

Joining this model in the launch line-up are the BMW Z4 sDrive23i and the Z4 sDrive30i. Both use the same magnesium aluminium alloy engine with Double VANOS and VALVETRONIC technology, but with varying capacities. The 2.5-litre entry-level BMW Z4 sDrive23i produces 204hp to achieve its zero to 62mph time of 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 151mph. In contrast the BMW Z4 sDrive23i is capable of a combined 33.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 199g/km.

The BMW Z4 sDrive30i comes with a 3.0-litre powerplant producing 258hp. The six-cylinder engine records a zero to 62mph time of 5.8 seconds before going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Like the BMW Z4 sDrive23i, the Z4 sDrive30i posts impressive combined consumption and CO2 emission figures, recording 33.2mpg and 199g/km.

Transmitting the power to the road in all three Z4s is a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Customers of the BMW Z4 sDrive23i and the Z4 sDrive30i who prefer the characteristics of an automatic can specify a six-speed Sport Automatic transmission featuring gear change paddles on the steering wheel. Buyers of the BMW Z4 sDrive35i can choose a seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission, again with gear shift paddles located on the steering wheel.

Increased comfort and practicality
BMW's latest roadster is larger than its predecessor measuring 148mm longer at 4,239mm and 9mm wider at 1,790mm, and this results in greater interior space and luggage capacity. With the roof up, headroom has been increased by 44mm while the greater car width and design enhancements have led to 20mm more shoulder room and 43mm more elbow room.

Driver visibility in the BMW Z4 has also been improved. All round visibility is up by 14 per cent while, courtesy of the four electric windows creating a larger glasshouse, side visibility is up 40 per cent. The Retractable Hard-Top roof features a glass rear window and this too improves visibility by 52 per cent.

The most recent incarnation of iDrive makes its first appearance on a BMW Z4. The optional BMW Professional Multimedia Navigation system features a hard disc drive capable of 12Gb of audio file storage and BMW ConnectedDrive functionality. A vehicle specified with this system also comes with eight programmable Favourite buttons as system shortcuts.

Market
The new BMW Z4 has been introduced to compete head-on with the two big biggest sellers in the UK premium roadster market - the Mercedes SLK and the Audi TT Roadster. According to BMW's own market research one of the key reasons for selecting the Mercedes over the previous BMW Z4 was the added benefit of a folding metal roof. The majority of buyers in this segment also craved a degree more comfort and practicality. The designers and engineers of the new BMW Z4 took these considerations on board so the BMW Z4 should now appeal to a broader church, while at the same time not diluting the range's previous excellent driving dynamics.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe (2010)

Download Wallpapers(117)
The 2009 Geneva Motor Show sees the comeback of an intriguing product idea with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé. Just three months after the presentation of the E-Class Saloon, the brand is launching a highlight in the new model series while continuing a tradition that has repeatedly met with great enthusiasm throughout the history of the E-Class.
The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé offers a very special combination of two attributes for which the Mercedes brand is known: fascination and efficiency. With its classic coupé side aspect - no B-pillars and fully retractable side windows - the new two-door car is a particularly sporty interpretation of the E-Class's dynamic design. At the same time the most aerodynamic variant of the Coupé achieves a new world best in terms of drag coefficient: with a Cd-figure of just 0.24, this model is the world's most aerodynamically efficient series-production car. The model programme includes two new 4-cylinder engines, which consume up to 17% less fuel whilst offering a significant increase in performance and torque. The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé's standard-fit AGILITY CONTROL suspension adjusts automatically to the current driving situation. It combines driving enjoyment and excellent handling with maximum comfort. The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé will be in UK showrooms from June 2009.

The new Coupé offers all the technical innovations of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class series that one might expect to find in a sports-oriented luxury coupé. These include selective damper control, drowsiness detection, preventive occupant protection and the Active Bonnet. As a feature specific to the Coupé, the Dynamic Driving package allows different suspension setups at the touch of a button. Adaptive Main Beam Assist and an automatic emergency braking system are also features with which the new series sets standards in this vehicle category.

The E-Class also takes on a pioneering role in the drive sector. The new diesels and direct-injection petrol engines combine efficiency with an effortless power delivery. The engine line-up includes two new four-cylinder models which deliver significantly more power and torque while consuming up to 17 percent less fuel. The best example is the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé, which consumes 53.3 mpg emits 139 grams of CO2 per kilometre, making it one of the most economical vehicles in its class.

The exemplary, fuel consumption has not only been achieved because of the new engines, but also with a number of practical measures. These include on-demand activation of the steering and fuel pumps, the use of tyres with low rolling resistance and an alternator control system which takes account of the current driving situation and the vehicle's electrical power requirements, plus the very decisive factor of outstanding aerodynamics.

Design which expresses passion and effortless superiority
The design of the new two-door model includes traditional styling elements which give Mercedes-Benz Coupés their unmistakable identity: for example the side windows, which are not interrupted by a B-pillar and are fully retractable. Another hallmark of Mercedes Coupé design is the sports radiator grille with the large central star. At the same time, however, the new model points the way to the future with an exciting, contemporary design idiom.

At the same time the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé shows its close family resemblance to the E-Class Saloon. This is shown by the 'twin-headlamp face', with rhomboid contours but somewhat sportier, sharper treatment for a more dynamic and incisive look.

Another design feature which the Coupé shares with the Saloon is the powerful contour of the rear wing - a styling cue which also gave the S 220 "Ponton" Coupé of 1955 its athletic appearance.
Although it shares family traits with the Saloon, the Coupé has its own, distinct identity characterised by effortless superiority and a greater sense of passion. The arrow shape of the entire front section from front bumper to radiator to bonnet, the more extreme interpretation of the twin headlamp face and its more lean build give it a racier and more dynamic presence.

Newly developed seats with a sporty design
The seats of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé are new developments whose design and technology reflect the sporty nature of this two-door Mercedes. They are electrically adjustable for seat height and backrest angle as standard. The high, sports car-like seat backrests have a practical Easy-Entry function to make access and egress easier for rear-seat passengers. In conjunction with electric seat adjustment with memory (an optional extra), the front seats are equipped with electro pneumatically adjustable four-way lumbar supports; these are able to provide anatomically favourable support for the lower spine, which further improves seating comfort.

Luxury seats with leather upholstery are standard on the SE, and active ventilation available is available as an optional extra. The newly developed multicontour seats with inflatable air chambers in the front seat cushions as well as in the centre and side bolsters of the backrests are standard on the Sport model. Two comfortable individual seats are available for the rear passengers. These feature backrests which can be folded down individually or together to increase the capacity of the luggage compartment.

Engines: fuel consumption improved by 17 percent
The diesel in the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé is the top-of-the-range unit in the new generation of Mercedes-Benz four-cylinder engines, which are notable for features such as two-stage turbo charging, precise piezo injectors and the latest common-rail technology. The engine has an output of 204 hp and develops a maximum torque of 500 Nm which is available from just 1600 rpm. This means that it is some 36 percent more powerful than the four-cylinder diesel in the preceding model yet consumes 17 percent less fuel returning 53.3 mpg (combined NEDC consumption, provisional figure). This corresponds to a carbon dioxide emission level of 139 grams per kilometre.

The turbocharged V6 diesel engine with common-rail direct injection remains in the line-up. Fitted in the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé, it develops 231 hp (previously: 224 hp) and returns 41.5 mpg (combined) in the NEDC cycle. Its carbon-dioxide emissions are 179 grams per kilometre.

Two new petrol engines with direct injection
Mercedes-Benz has also chosen to move over to direct-injection technology for its petrol engines. Once again, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé points the way: the power plant at work under the bonnet of the E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé is a newly developed four-cylinder direct-injection unit with 204 hp and a five-speed automatic transmission as standard. This engine returns 40.4 mpg (combined NEDC consumption, provisional figure). CO2 emissions are 164 grams per kilometre. This is some 13 percent less than the figure for the previous four-cylinder engine (184 hp) with conventional fuel injection.

Mercedes-Benz has replaced the previous V6 petrol engine with the world's first six-cylinder unit featuring spray-guided direct petrol injection in the new E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé. This engine develops 292 hp - an extra 20 hp - and consumes about 14 percent less fuel than the previous V6 engine: its combined fuel economy is 32.5 mpg. This corresponds to 203 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

In the top-of-the-range model, the E 500 Coupé, the muscular V8 engine with 388 hp and 530 Nm of torque offers the performance characteristics of a sports car. Mercedes engineers have enhanced details of the eight-cylinder unit, to returns 25.9 mpg (combined NEDC consumption). All the engines in the new E-Class Coupés meet the EU5 exhaust emission standard.

Safety: sensors, radar and cameras for safer driving
The safety systems newly developed for the E-Class are based on accident research findings; they can make a valuable contribution to enabling safe, accident-free driving, improving vehicle occupant protection and, moreover, helping to increase the safety of other road users. These trend-setting developments are also available for the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé, or are included in its standard equipment. Based on highly sensitive sensors, cameras and radar systems, they turn this two-door model into an "intelligent partner" able to see, feel and react reflexively in critical situations and, if necessary, act independently if the danger of an accident is acute.

Drowsiness is one of the most common causes of accidents on motorways. This is why Mercedes experts have developed the ATTENTION ASSIST system which forms part of the standard equipment of the new Mercedes E-Class Coupé. As the vehicle is being driven, the system continuously evaluates more than 70 different parameters in order to identify driver drowsiness and provide a warning before the dangerous microsleep phase begins. Observing the driver's steering behaviour has proved to be a particularly strong indicator: several years of practical research by Mercedes engineers has shown that drowsy drivers make minor steering errors which they often correct very rapidly in a characteristic way. This steering behaviour is recognised by a special steering angle sensor.

Also fitted as standard is the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection system - a Mercedes invention which has received a number of awards and which is not offered by any other vehicle in this class. If there is immediate danger of an accident occurring, the system activates protective measures for the driver and front passenger as a precaution so that the seat belts and airbags can provide their full protective effect on impact. This warning of an impending accident is possible because PRE-SAFE® uses the sensors of the Brake Assist system and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) to identify potentially critical dynamic handling situations.

Adaptive Main Beam Assist for the best possible road illumination
Like the Saloon, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé also offers the latest lighting technology. The headlamps adjust continuously to the current driving situation and react automatically to offer the driver the best possible degree of road illumination at all times. This task is taken care of by the Adaptive Main Beam Assist function: a camera fitted on the inside of the windscreen allows the system to detect oncoming vehicles/vehicles in front and automatically controls the headlamps to prevent the other road users from being dazzled. As a result, the range of the dipped-beam headlamps can increase from the current norm of 65 metres to as much as 300 metres. If the road ahead is clear, the system performs a gradual transition to high-beam mode.

Adaptive Main Beam Assist is based on the bi-xenon headlamps, which Mercedes-Benz offers in combination with LED daytime driving lights. This is standard on the Sport and optional on the SE.

Automatic emergency braking when a collision is imminent
The well-proven assistance systems from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class which help to prevent rear-end collisions are now available for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé, too. They use long and short-range radar sensors to monitor the traffic situation ahead of the vehicle and warn the driver if there is a risk of an accident. Mercedes-Benz combines these technologies in the DISTRONIC PLUS system; along with the proximity control system - which automatically maintains the Coupé at a set distance from the vehicle in front and can brake it to a standstill if required by the traffic situation - this comprises Brake Assist PLUS and thePRE-SAFE® Brake.

Brake Assist PLUS intervenes if there is suddenly a very rapid reduction in the distance. In this situation, the system warns the driver and almost instantaneously calculates the degree of braking assistance necessary to prevent a collision. This brake force is available immediately the driver depresses the brake pedal. Depending on the speed and distance, it allows controlled braking to a defined point or - if necessary - emergency braking.

The PRE-SAFE® Brake goes a step further and automatically brakes the E-Class if there is imminent danger of a collision and the driver does not react to the warnings. This can reduce the severity of an impact considerably, as the system can be regarded as something like an "electronic crumple zone" which offers the occupants an even greater degree of safety.

Most comprehensive array of safety features in this vehicle category
With seven standard-fit airbags, belt tensioners and belt force limiters on all seats, as well as crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé offers the most comprehensive array of safety features in this vehicle category. The range of airbags, which can deploy in thousandths of a second in an accident, comprises front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger, a knee bag for the driver and window bags. Rear sidebags are available as an optional extra.

The front crumple zone has four independent impact planes which allow the forces to be distributed over a wide area while bypassing the passenger cell.
Furthermore, increased use of extra-high-strength steel alloy helps the vehicle body to withstand high impact loads. In fact, particularly strong grades of steel like this account for about two thirds of all the sheet metal used in the body shell of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé.

An Active Bonnet, which forms part of the standard equipment, is the latest development to result from Mercedes-Benz's long-standing and successful commitment to pedestrian protection. In the event of an impact, a system of springs raises the rear section of the bonnet by 50 millimetres within a fraction of a second, thereby increasing the available deformation space. A special feature of the Mercedes system is its reversible mechanism which allows the driver to reset the Active Bonnet without having to visit a workshop.

Comfort: advanced technology for a new driving experience
Along with safety, comfort has always been one of the outstanding qualities of the E-Class. Here, too, the Coupé lives up to the high standard set by the Saloon and demonstrates further noticeable progress, especially with regard to ride, seating and climate comfort. Another important comfort factor is the generous interior space, which Mercedes engineers created by increasing both the length and width of the vehicle body by 46 millimetres. This resulted in the distance between the front and rear seat reference points - an important dimension for the occupants' freedom of movement - increasing by ten millimetres to 789 mm while the elbow width improved by up to 49 millimetres, compared to the preceding model.

High standard of ride comfort through selective damper control
The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé's standard-fit AGILITY CONTROL suspension adjusts automatically to the current driving situation. In order to provide the best possible ride comfort, this system reduces the damping during normal driving but immediately applies the maximum damping force during dynamic cornering or sudden evasive manoeuvres. This ensures optimum stabilisation of the Coupé.

As an alternative to the standard-fit AGILITY CONTROL suspension which is set up for comfort, a variant with a sportier damper response and more direct steering - the AGILITY CONTROL sports suspension - is available as an optional extra. To meet the requirements of even more demanding drivers, Mercedes-Benz has developed a dynamic handling package (Standard on the E500 Coupé and optional on the Sport model line) with an electronically controlled damping system. This processes sensor data about the current driving situation and adjusts the shock absorbers separately for each wheel. Furthermore, the driver can switch between two drive modes - Comfort and Sport - which make corresponding adjustments to the suspension set-up, accelerator response and the shift points of the automatic transmission. A newly developed speed-sensitive sports steering system with a more direct ratio and variable centring is also standard on the Sport model line.

In order to allow a comparison of suspension characteristics, Mercedes engineers have developed the body index - a composite formula which is calculated from the readings for various typical driving manoeuvres. The body index is an indication of how well the suspension is linked to the body, how closely the car hugs the road and how nimble the handling is through fast bends. The higher the figure, the sportier - i.e. the firmer - the suspension characteristics.

The body index shows how the dynamic handling package is able to meet customers' requirements for dynamism and comfort in equal measure: the index figure of 2.06 attained in Sport mode is reduced to 1.89 - a typical level for a saloon - when Comfort mode is selected.

Individual climatic comfort at the touch of button
The newly developed luxury automatic climate control system regulates the temperature, volume and distribution of the air inthree zones to meet the requirements of the driver, front passenger and rear passengers. What's more, for the first time, this optional THERMOTRONIC system allows the selection of different climatisation modes: the occupants can choose "Diffuse", "Medium" or "Focus" modes at the touch of a button in order to adapt the air volume and distribution to their personal preferences while still benefiting from the convenience and comfort of automatically regulated climate control. Fitted as standard in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé, the THERMATIC two-zone automatic climate control has been enhanced to offer five percent more heating and cooling power than the version fitted in the predecessor model.

Infotainment system with colour display in the dashboard
The well-proven operating conceptfrom the S-Class, comprising the multifunction steering wheel, Controller on the centre tunnel, colour display in the dash-board and direct selection buttons also offers the occupants of the new Mercedes E-Class Coupé a very high standard of operating comfort.

The Controller puts all the functions of the advanced infotainment system - such as the radio, CD/DVD player, telephone and navigation system - at the fingertips of the driver and front passenger. The Audio 20 CD radio with eight loudspeakers, a CD player and a Bluetooth interface for a mobile phone is fitted as standard. Customers who specify the optional COMAND multimedia system benefit from additional functions: a Europe-wide hard-disc navigation system, a DVD changer, the Music Register (storage for about 1000 music tracks), a media interface for connecting external MP3 and voice control with whole-word recognition. Further options for even greater listening pleasure are available in the form of a 500-watt surround sound system, players and a tuner for digital radio reception. Navigation 50 will also be optional on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé providing a compromise between Audio 20 and COMAND offering a head unit with full colour mapping as well as the media interface.

Model range: individuality through variety
With a line-up of five engines in the UK, three suspension variants, a wide choice of colours, five different wheel/tyre combinations and many optional extras, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé offers plenty of scope for customers to turn their individual automotive dreams into reality. The basis for configuring the look and feel of the Coupé is provided by the SE and SPORT model lines.

These not only offer different upholsteries and items of trim, but are complete configuration packages designed to create a completely different atmosphere. Depending on the choice, the interior differs in its colour scheme and mix of materials to emphasise the elegant or progressive character of the Coupé.

The Sport model line clearly focuses on agility and performance potential. AMG body styling includes the unmistakable contours of the AMG front apron with large air intakes, AMG side skirts and the expressive AMG rear apron with a black insert. High-sheen 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a 6 twin-spoke design with wide-base tyres in size 235/40 R 18 at the front and 255/35 R 18 at the rear provide further highlights. The AGILITY CONTROL sports suspension with a stiffer spring, shock absorber and stabiliser setup is combined with large, perforated brake discs at the front, plus brake callipers with Mercedes-Benz lettering. Perfect road contact is ensured by the sports speed-sensitive steering with a more direct ratio.
