2010 Chevy Aveo Sedan778B84F2AYXP

2010 Chevy Aveo Sedan778B84F2AYXP

The No.1 least expensive sedan" title doesn't go to the $14,150 Chevrolet Aveo LS, but it is in the running. Only the $12,594 Ford Fiesta S Sedan and the $12,698 Nissan Versa 1.6 S and manage to submarine under it in price, albeit the Fiesta is a 2011 model. In this contest of austerity, they are each bare-bones creatures with little in the way of amenities. None have air conditioning, however you can beat time on the steering wheel as you perspire because each at least have a basic audio system. If all you are looking for is simple motorized transportation, you don't mind sweating in the summer, and you embrace the "old school" method of manually cranking down the side glass, any of these bargain-basement models fills the bill.

Moving up the Aveo food chain to the only better equipped trim level expands the list of standard features and broadens the range of available options. Chevrolet provided an example of its top-end $16,850 Aveo LT for this evaluation. No matter how you dress up Aveo, however, it is an economy subcompact. By building in some creature comforts, you can make life in this sedan more livable; but when you distill it all down, it is still an econobox. What you get for its fire-sale price is the quickness of a three-legged plow horse and the handling dynamics of a tricycle. It's that "simple transportation" thing at work, you see.

Because of its tidy size and small engine, Aveo is best suited for city slogging. Its 4,318-mm (170-inch) length is just over a hundred millimeters (4.0 inches) shorter than the new Ford Fiesta and more than a hundred and fifty millimeters (6.0 inches) shorter than the Versa. This is an ideal size for squeezing into narrow slots along the curb or the undersized spaces in many city parking facilities.

Another characteristic reinforcing Aveo's cred as a city commuter is its aversion to gas pumps. Its miserly approach to conserving fuel is the most notable benefit of being powered by a 108-horsepower 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on both Aveo sedan trim packages. Chevy offers an optional four-speed automatic for $1,150. The EPA estimates the fuel economy for Aveos with the manual tranny at the equivalent of a healthy 8.7 L/100km in the city and 6.7 on the highway (on the less conservative Canadian cycle it gets and estimated 7.9 and 5.7 respectively). This isn't far behind the 2010 segment leader Toyota Yaris at an EPA equivalent 8.1 and 6.5 respectively (6.9 and 5.5 on the Canadian cycle).

Aveo can travel more than 600 km (400 miles) on a tank of gas. The average consumer has a 60-km (40-mile) round-trip commute each day. That means on a weekly basis, after carrying its owner to and from work each day, Aveo will still have up to 30 km (200 miles) left in the tank for running errands.

As sure as day follows night, with few exceptions small-displacement fuel-sipping four bangers earning impressive mileage numbers historically offer meager acceleration. Giving the spurs to this four cylinder produces a lot more bark than bite. With all the chaos under the hood that firmly goosing the accelerator brings, you would expect telephone poles along the road to suddenly blur. Not so. Having said that, in pulling away from a traffic light in congested city traffic (Where Aveo is most at home.), it won't be left sucking the exhaust fumes of Yaris, Versa and other "urban" transports. Bottom line: It won't disappoint when pressed into service as the urban warrior it was engineered to be.

The front suspension is an independent MacPherson-strut setup. Typical in this segment, there is a solid axle in the rear. Chevy has done more than should be expected in tuning the suspension. Even if the power components were up to the task, the suspension architecture doesn't encourage flogging Aveo around the twisties; however, the suspension provides decent passenger comfort and handling characteristics adequate for typical city driving.

Quite common within the segment, discs up front and drums in the rear provide stopping power. Where ABS is available among competitors, it's usually as an option. Chevy offers it as a $600 extra. Electronic stability control isn't offered at all.

Don't expect to be dazzled by Aveo's interior. There is a lot of plastic. However, the styling is pleasant and choosing the neutral cloth seat trim, rather than charcoal, brings with it a two-toned dashboard treatment with faux wood accents. The controls are straight forward in their operation and easy to locate. The four-speaker audio system comes with an auxiliary input jack. The seats are comfortable enough for moderate distances and errand running. Front-seat legroom is good, as is headroom. Rear-seat passengers may feel a bit cramped, particularly if the full complement of three is shoehorned across the rear bench. The trunk holds 351 litres (12.4 cubic feet) of cargo.

Other than the already mentioned audio system, the LS is pretty basic; however, all Aveo's do come with a 6-way adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, driver’s armrests, 60/40 split rear seatbacks, side-impact airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, GM's OnStar communications capability and 12-months free service. Moving up to the LT adds air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, and an upgraded audio system with six speakers and a CD player, full power accessories including remote keyless entry and power locks, power windows and power remote mirrors, a trip computer, and cruise control.

A special Team Canada Edition at $1,635 includes 15-inch alloy wheels, a trunk mounted spoiler, a premium 6-speaker sound system with an iPod cable, satellite radio and redundant audio controls on the steering wheel, plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

Budget-priced sedans aren't designed to get anyone's adrenaline flowing. They target buyers who must get from point A to point B, and want to do so with a degree of reliability. Aveo has that covered. It may not be cool, but it is inexpensive. And that's what econoboxes are all about.

PREVIEW - 2015 Mercedes-Benz R-Klasse

Recent inside information hints at the possibility of a major rehaul for the second generation of the sluggish-selling R-Klasse. Set to debut towards the end of 2014 or in the first quarter of 2015, the once-called Grand Sports Tourer could back up those fancy-looking classification terms for the first time since its launch as a niche model in 2004. That is because Mercedes-Benz plans to completely remaster the large crossover into a more dynamic, attractive and, nonetheless, versatile van (or further call it GT), based on the new E-Klasse MRA (Mercedes Rearwheel Architecture) technical platform, which is far more suitable and modular for such a vehicle, as to accommodate a whole array of interesting powering solutions (fuel cell, hybrid, electric or the conventional IC units). This way, Mercedes-Benz will put a consistent (and, we say, logical) distance between the R-Klasse and the ML-/GL-Klasse, seeing the fact they won't use the same underpinnigs anymore. Most probably, the new R-Klasse will take on BMW's 5er Gran Turismo, as this time, it really looks like the Stuttgart-based constructor will, for the first time, display a tough competitor for the Bavarian opponent.

Internet Auto Award 2010: SLS AMG and R-Class emerge as the most popular cars

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Stuttgart, Germany, Oct 27, 2010 – Mercedes-Benz has taken three first places in Europe's largest public internet survey. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG even scored top honours in two awards, winning both the super sports car and coup category as well as simultaneously being voted Europe's most popular car. The Mercedes-Benz R-Class also picked up an Internet Auto Award 2010 as Europe's most popular van.

This is the ninth time that AutoScout24, Europe's largest online automobile marketplace offering around 1.8 million vehicles, has conducted an online survey to discover Europe's most popular cars. More than 230,000 participants from seven countries cast their votes to choose their favourites from among 343 vehicles.

When it came to voting for Europe's most popular car, the answer could not have been clearer: the majority of the voting public opted for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG super sports car. A unique and exciting style combined with an exquisite level of engineering - all of which evoke memories of that sports car legend from the 1950s, the 300 SL - enabled the gullwing to take top honours in this category. On top of this, the SLS also emerged as the clear winner in the super sports car and coup category.

The most popular vehicle in the van and compact van category, according to the online community, was the Mercedes-Benz R-Class. By voting in this way, the participants acknowledged the fact that the R-Class not only boasts an exciting design, but also meets the requirements of contemporary-minded, leisure-oriented people looking for a versatile car that also provides agile handling. It combines first-class comfort for up to seven people, a high degree of variability and a prestigious character.

In Germany, other Mercedes-Benz vehicles were also voted into the top places. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class won in the medium-size category and the E-Class in the intermediate category, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet picked up the most votes in the cabriolet category.

SPY - 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Cabriolet

After a long break, photographers have managed to capture on tape a 2012 SLS AMG prototype with its roof down. The open-top supercar from Affalterbach will be revealed at next year's IAA in Frankfurt, so we're still pretty much away from the moment we'll see the new cabriolet "naked", although the test cars are barely disguised. The convertible variant of the new Gullwing will make use of a soft top, in order to keep things light, as well as to remind everyone of the legendary 300 SL Roadster from the 50s. The engine will be the same as in the case of the coupe version - a 6.2 liters naturally-aspirated V8 unit, pumping out a staggering 571 BHP of peak output.

BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 800: The Worlds Most Powerful and Fastest Luxury Sedan

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Bottrop, Germany, Oct 25, 2010

BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 800: 800 hp (788 bhp) / 588 kW and a peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft) transform the Mercedes S 600 in latest BRABUS specification into the world’s most powerful luxury sedan. But that’s not all: With an electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph) the exclusive four-seater also wins the ‘Blue Ribbon’ as the world’s fastest luxury liner. BRABUS rounds out the new high-performance standard with a sporty yet elegant designer suit, custom-tailored wheels with diameters of up to 21 inches, a high-performance brake system and customer-specific interior upgrades including a state-of-the-art “iBusiness” multimedia system with Apple components.

Twelve-cylinder high-capacity engines in the S-Class look back on almost two decades of tradition at BRABUS. Powered by the SV12 R Biturbo 800 engine originally developed for the BRABUS E V12 “one of ten” the automotive luxury class now attains a new level of performance.

Displacement of the V12 engine that normally powers the latest Mercedes 600 models is increased from 5.5 to 6.3 liters (336 to 385 cu. in.) The displacement increase is the product of a special crankshaft with longer stroke, precision-balanced piston rods, larger-diameter pistons and corresponding larger cylinder bore. The inner workings of the BRABUS engine are modified further by high-performance camshafts and flow-optimized cylinder heads.

The new air intake was custom-developed to fit in the available space under the hood of the S-Class. The combustion air is routed through a special carbon-fiber system. Also newly developed was the BRABUS Biturbo system with two special high-performance manifolds with integrated turbine housings and high-performance turbochargers. The system also includes four water-to-air intercoolers. The BRABUS stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with sport catalysts and four exhaust tips with BRABUS-characteristic design optimizes power yield and gives the engine a more dominant exhaust note.

Newly calibrated engine electronics with precision-programmed mapping for injection and ignition ensure exemplary power yield and compliance with strict EURO V emission limits. The high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain are supplied by technology partner ARAL.

The SV12 R Biturbo 800 engine produces 800 hp (788 bhp) / 588 kW at 5,500 rpm and an even more impressive peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft), available from a low 2,100 rpm. For technical reasons peak torque is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft).

Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a reinforced five-speed automatic transmission. A BRABUS high-performance limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent is available as an option.

The extraordinary performance figures elevate the BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 800 to the exalted position of the world’s most powerful and fastest luxury sedan. Acceleration times from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) of 3.9 seconds and of just 10.3 seconds to 200 km/h (124 mph) are as unmatched in this vehicle category as is the electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).

To ensure that this level of performance can be enjoyed safely at all times BRABUS also significantly upgrades suspension, brakes and aerodynamics.

These upgrades naturally also include tires capable of handling the speeds this car is capable of. The SV12 R Biturbo 800 can be equipped with BRABUS Monoblock wheels with diameters ranging from 19 to 21 inches. The largest version features wheels in size 9Jx21 on the front axle and in size 10.5Jx21 in the rear. These wheels are available in four distinct designs: Three-piece forged and high-gloss polished BRABUS Monoblock VI wheels with six double spokes, multi-spoke Monoblock E wheels, Monoblock S wheels with double-spoke design and especially exclusive Monoblock F PLATINUM EDITION forged wheels with cross-spoke design. All wheels are mounted with Pirelli or YOKOHAMA tires in sizes 265/30 ZR 21 in front and 295/30 ZR 21 on the rear axle.

To further improve the already excellent driving dynamics of the high-performance luxury sedan BRABUS developed an electronics module for the Active Body Control suspension that lowers the ride height by some 15 millimeters (0.6 inches).

Maximum deceleration is even more important than exceptional acceleration and thus the BRABUS high-performance brake system is part of the high-tech package of the SV12 R Biturbo 800. The brake features 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers and 380 x 36-mm (15.0 x 1.42 inches) vented and cross-drilled discs in front, and 355 x 28-mm (14.0 x 1.1 inches) discs and six-piston aluminum fixed calipers on the rear axle.

BRABUS ensures extremely high directional stability with a sporty yet elegant designer suit developed in the wind tunnel. The BRABUS front fascia lends the S-Class an even more striking face while its sophisticated shape reduces lift on the front axle. The large central air inlet optimizes cooling of engine and front brakes. Integrated auxiliary headlamps and LED daytime running lights further improve active safety. The BRABUS front spoiler lip is made from clear-coated carbon fiber and attaches to the underside of the BRABUS front fascia. It further optimizes the car’s aerodynamic properties.

For an even more extravagant appearance of the sedan BRABUS offers custom-tailored aluminum front fenders that replace their production counterparts. The exclusive character of these fenders is embodied by an integrated air vent made from clear-coated carbon fiber and a horizontal brace that spans the vent with embossed BRABUS signet and integrated LED lights. The latter are activated just like the ones in the BRABUS side sills via the keyless remote or by pulling on a door handle.

For optimizing the airflow around the sides of the vehicle the designers sculpted BRABUS sill skirts that feature integrated entrance lights for added utility. They are activated by the keyless remote or by pulling on a door handle as are the blue-illuminated BRABUS logos integrated into the scuff plates on both sides of the vehicle.

The BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement concept is rounded out by the BRABUS rear spoiler lip, also available in a clear-coated carbon-fiber version, and the new rear fascia with centrally located reflector and custom cutouts for the BRABUS quad sport exhaust system. The underside of the rear fascia also features integrated LED lights which illuminate the ground behind the vehicle. They help avoid any unfortunate missteps into puddles or potholes lurking in the dark.

BRABUS combines this high-performance technical feast with exclusive interior options that suit each customer’s personal taste down to the last detail. These options include fully leather interiors in any color imaginable, Alcantara supplements and exclusive wood trim sets which can be ordered in any desired color thanks to an innovative staining technology.

A particular BRABUS specialty is the creation of state-of-the-art multimedia equipment including the innovative BRABUS “iBusiness” concept, where the BRABUS specialists for the first time have integrated Apple components into the vehicle electronics of the Mercedes S-Class.
