BMW 316 won't start odd ticking clicking :-(?

Question 1
BMW 316 won't start odd ticking clicking :-(?...  Hi My BMW 316 won't start, When I turn the ignition it just makes a ticking clicking noise, I thought it maybe a flat battery but the batt seems fine all lights come on and stereo and everything powers.

Any Idea what the tickings all about ?

Answers
1)   Your battery is dead, or you need a new battery. - jeff

2)   If it's clicking its probably the starter. - stooe

3)   if your battery is ok then check for loose connections on battery to starter motor. It may be your starter motor, turn off ignition, try rocking the car back and forth in 1st gear to free the starter motor or give it a few gentle taps with a small hammer on its casing to free it, good luck. - drew

4)   facts
it takes abt 9 volts to play radio and have lights...12+ to turn starter
1 check battery 12.7 volts or more
2 got volts? check cables...clean/tight
3 starter solonoid,,,may or may not be part of starter..idk about BMWs - pedro7of9

5)   The battery has enough power to do the minor things but not enough for starting - Timbo is here

6)   STARTER OR BATTERY. if you have lights and clicks its the batter. - Fuffas

7)   the fuel censor is not working, - Frank

8)   Hi pedro and timbo are right. The big demand on your battery is turning the starter motor at start up.You have enough power in your battery to work all the ancillaries Lights radio etc. so your left thinking your battery has a full charge. Jump start the car from another then run it for a little while be fore switching off. - Charles

9)   its the starter solenoid ...the power goes through solenoid before it gets to starter motor ..its a common fault on older cars - boy boy

10)   you need a new starter motor,, that clicking sound is the solenoid thats worn out.. - Jenson Shephard

Answers
1)   Jaguar - DAT GUY

2)   MERCEDES OF COURSE - LL

3)   from those i would say bmw, i just got an 2010 m3 last weekend, so powerful and quick. the benz and porsche seems like a car for the elderly person. and audi ummm uhh i dont know. - z34

4)   bmw - Stereo Stereo

5)   BMW...they are the easiest to work on. They handle FAMOUSLY WELL. (as do the other three.) I have owned all of those except a Porsche (although I have driven many and they are made by the same company as Audi anyway) and I enjoyed driving BMW's the best. Get a 3 series they are the most reliable (and easiest to work on) of the BMW series.
In response to the other answer... RUN away from Jaguars...they are known to be quite problematic and a PITA to fix. - Bimmerbabygirl

6)   MERCEDES DUB + AUDI A8 W12 - Jenson Shephard

7)   Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The only choice. - Murcie_LP640

8)   You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here - carquotes.fateback.com - Antony

9)   Audi, performance at a good price. - inquisitor

10)   For my age I would choose a 2011 Infiniti M56. If I was older I would choose a 2011 Jaguar XJ Super Charged!

Question 3
BMW Or Mercedes, which do you prefer and why?...  Need I ask More?

Answers
1)   well I'd take an AMG over M - stangace20

2)   BMW. They're cheaper to buy than most Mercedes, plus they are luxurious and reliable. I'm not saying that Mercedes doesn't have these qualities; all I'm saying is that with BMW, you get more for your money. - Quantum

3)   I prefer BMW's as not only are they cheaper to buy, but they overall have a sportier look to them (eg BMW M3 or C class AMG), and Mercedes to me seem more reserved in looks and arent as striking, and seem to be aimed at older drivers due to their styling and overall reputation - K-K

4)   BMW the Mercedes is not all that reliable - pickmefirstplz

5)   Personally they are both great... I'll list some things i notice IN GENERAL about both brands

BMW
-Tends to be more expensive (New) for a fully loaded compared to a similar Benz (ie. 3 series vs C class, 5 Series vs E Class, 7 Series vs S class)
-Tends to have a sporty edge than the Benz
-Tends to have a higher re-sale value than the comparable Benz

Benz
-Tends to look at Luxurious ride than sportiness (not a huge difference... like Honda is a tad more sportier than Toyota... the Honda would be the BMW in this case and the Toyota would be the Benz)
-People tend to think that Benz are more expensive than BMW - E-Y

6)   BMW and Mercedes are both great sports/ luxury cars. However what it comes down to is how much your willing to spend on maintenance. Mercedes owners (that I've known) are constantly dropping money in their car while BMW owners (that I've known) spend very little money on upkeep and the warranties are very good plus if something goes wrong with the car, i.e. bad software or a defect, they will pay to have it fixed. - Jeremy

7)   BMW
the tds is espically attractive to me

if you drive a Mercedies where im from
people think you're a posh waanker , or spoilt p rick (if you're under 20) - JimmyMoran

Question 4
is a 1996 bmw 318ti a good car for a 16 year old guy?...  115k miles too fyi...

Answers
1)   its a car, why not =) - Meena

2)   Insurance would be pretty high - Dustin Clinger

3)   Yeah insurance would be high even though its got a small engine which kind of defeats the point of a bmw.Only consider the larger engined bmws but for a 16 year i suppose it would be ok. - CQB 241

4)   Be sure you can afford repairs, insurance and regular maintenance. They aren't cheap to run like your Grandpa's Buick. - PikesPeak

5)   You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here - carquotes.fateback.com - Jimmy

6)   I would stay away. It would cost more than the car is worth for one visit in the shop. If you do go German, go with a Merc. - Jason

7)   The 318ti would be a PERFECT car for you and a great intro to BMW.
4 cylinder maintenance is a lot easier than the larger I-6.
This car is NOT expensive to insure, contrary to what others are suggesting here.
Maintenance won't be expensive if you do it outside, and the 318ti is very reliable, more so than the current models.
You can also learn a lot by doing some of the maintenance yourself. Being 16, I think it's a perfect time to learn.
- fluid changes, brake job, spark plugs, radio, speakers, headlamps...etc plenty of opportunities to maintain, upgrade parts and learn something at the same time. Get yourself a repair manual such as a Haynes manual ($16 @ amazon).

Stick shifts are the least troublesome but even the auto transmissions have been known to last up to 200k+ miles.

The hatch is super practical for you to haul occasional larger items (such as moving in your dorm) since it almost becomes a "mini wagon" with the seats down. - Snowie

Question 5
2003 BMW 325i, is it a good car?...  I am 16 years old and i am looking to get a 2003 BMW 325i, it has 110,000 miles on it and a clean carfax and service history, my parents are going to buy it for me but im not like most teens, i am not going to rag it out and drive it ruff, because i have done been informed that if i got a ticket 6 months with no keys, they said the only key i would have is the house key, so i am going to act responsible in it and take good care of it,me and my dad will be the one to change the oil when needed in our shop... so are these cars reliable or is it not worth getting,, the price of the car is 9000.. so just tell me what you think! also are BMW X5 good because my mom wants one and my dad is thinking about suprising her with one.. the X5 had 86000 miles on it.. it is the one with a V8 for 14000 and the year of it is a 2004.

Answers
1)   No if it has more then 110000 miles on it its crap because the engine is worn out and you will be spending more money on fixing it. - Dimitry

2)   all those beemers are good cars/however the x5 is a stove/lot of nagging stuff goes wrong on them/beemer makes great cars/trucks arent their line/by the way as an old beemer tech (certified) a 110k miles are nothing on that car/250 k is easy - ken k

3)   $9k is high. This is a good car but maintenance and repairs are costly, and at its age and mileage, it will need it. I think you could find one with fewer miles in that price range. - This Guys Sez

4)   yes - Stereo Stereo

5)   the bmw 325i E46 model is a good rated car as i have owned one before which had 150,000miles on the clock and it still had plenty of go in it. the only dissagvantage is the fuel economy wasnt that great. the BMW X5 is the worst 4x4 suv vehicle to purchase, it is usseless in the snow due to the width of the road tires .. - Jenson Shephard

6)   You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here - carinsurance.deep-ice.com - Brandon
