Mercedes to premiere electronically shaded glass roof in next SLK

The next Mercedes SLK might not have been unveiled yet, but the manufacturer is already keen to tout the world premiere of a new technology which will allow the driver to darken the car's panoramic glass roof at the touch of a button.

The system, dubbed Magic Sky Control, means the SLK's owner can enjoy the benefits of a glass roof without suffering any of the pitfalls, such as an overheated interior in direct sunlight.

In transparency mode the roof appears no different from the panoramic glass used in other convertibles, but by flicking a switch on the overhead centre console special particles in the material reposition themselves to partially block light from passing through.

The system reduces some of the need for air conditioning as the car's interior trim does not heat up as much – Mercedes claims that in intense sunlight certain parts of the cabin, such as the armrests, may be up to 10 degrees Celsius cooler compared to conventional glass.

The manufacturer intends to offer Magic Sky Control as an optional extra when the new SLK is launched next year. Specific prices will become available nearer the time, but Mercedes believe it is likely to cost around €2000 (£1750).
